June 2019 Pender Post Article

Solstice held its AGM last month and decided to change its normal format by making it a business only meeting and having a separate Members party in August. The party is already taking shape with musicians, singers, and actors already booked to perform alongside our very own awards ceremony to make this an unforgettable event.

Presidents Report from the AGM
Well, what a fantastic year we had! The island has been buzzing with non-stop talking about Solstice after we presented two amazing blockbuster shows, both of which were greatly helped by our new Team Solstice ethic. People have been amazed by how much we achieved by using only our unpaid volunteers. A number of our long-term members are also now inspired to attempt greater things, knowing that lots of help is there for them.
As for the shows: first up was the eagerly awaited Aladdin with its amazing costumes, fantastic sets, tremendous lighting and sound effects, and incredible cast. This all-singing, all-dancing riot of a show exceeded all our already high expectations and brought huge amounts of fun and laugher to all our community, young and old alike. As usual it provided an opportunity for lots of new faces to show off their talents both onstage and backstage, many of whom couldn’t wait for a chance to return. Especially the scene-stealing camel, I am told!
Next up was the Odd Couple (Female version). This very funny show played to packed houses every night and was the first time we experimented with presenting it over two weekends. This
proved to be very popular with our audiences as our attendance numbers show, making it the highest attended event we have ever put on. Once again new stars as well as returning stars appeared both backstage and on onstage to produce an amazing set, beautiful props, and incredible performances.
Looking to the future, we are hoping to increase our interaction with other groups on the island and research the possibilities of producing joint ventures together.
With God of Carnage coming up in November, showing the video versions of the Pantos at Xmas ,and plans for a new show in the spring, next year is already hotting up.
I would like to say a big special thanks to all of our supporters, helpers, actors, and actresses without whom none of this would be possible. Thank you.
– Keith Smith, El Presidente

Rehearsals will start in September and October with auditions taking place on June 23 at the Community Hall. We are looking for two males and two females aged between 25 and 50 years old. Please contact Julia at [email protected] or email [email protected] if you are interested. See ad on page 46.

Bursary Award
We are pleased to announce that Wren Wilde was awarded our $500 Bursary this year. You will probably remember her as our fantastic Cinderella, Babe in Crimes of the Heart, and as one of
the amazing cats in Aladdin. Well done Wren!

Workshop
Great news for all of you that have wanted to go on stage but never have. Maybe it’s because you didn’t know what you had to do or how to do it! Or maybe you are just interested in how
it all works. If so, we are holding a workshop that will teach you the three main basic skills required – motivation, delivery, and blocking. This workshop will be free to all our members, $10 to non members, and promises to be lots of fun (and yes, you will have to stand up and say a few words!).
