July 2019 Pender Post Article

At Solstice Theatre, we were also saddened to hear of the passing of Heather Sawatzky, who was a light in the community. Heather was one of those heroes who came to us when we really needed costuming help, and she offered so much more than that. Heather was part of a family that gives to so many things, and Solstice Theatre was more than thankful they chose to put a lot of energy, creativity and time into a number of Solstice productions between 2013 and 2017. Heather was a master costume designer and seamstress, and was there to help in whatever else was needed backstage for any production she was involved with. Some of the benefits Solstice gained from Heather’s enthusiasm and experience were redesigning the changing rooms; she helped in make-up and was a calming influence for costume changes for many of our performers. She could turn a ‘sow’s ear into a silk purse’ if we needed it Talented, calm, dependable, she also had a great sense of humour, no matter how chaotic things got back stage!
Heather was a costume and backstage angel; we will miss her more than we
can say. One of the Solstice plays Heather was involved in was 37 Postcards which was directed by Julia Nicholls. She fondly remembers Heather’s unbelievable design and needle work, and her keen sense of the play and knowing ‘what worked.’ Julia will be directing the upcoming Solstice Production God of Carnage for which we have just finished the auditions. The performances will be in early November and we are excited to get going as the team is starting to form now. If you would like to be part of the crew, send us an email. Being part of a theatre production is a fun and intense experience, whether it is building the stage, helping backstage with props, costuming, make-up, or operating the lights and sounds.
